La Diolle first appeared in 1654 in the Archives of the Chapter of Sion in the local dialect form "jiolaz." Its name certainly derives from the hamlet of Diolly above Sion. The last written mention of La Diolle dates back to 1903. Then it disappeared. Well, almost. In 2005, José Vouillamoz was conducting research into the oddities of the Valais vineyards. Winegrower Germain Héritier contacted him to show him two vines. Two years later, DNA testing carried out by the researcher revealed that it was an unknown variety, resulting from a natural cross between Rèze and another unknown variety, probably extinct. It was Diolle.
